Ate regret to have to record the death of four club members, Messrs L. Baker, P. Kelly, E. Short and A. F. Fitzherbert. 51 r Short was a member of the committee for several years, and Mr Fitzherbert was a very old member who in the early days °f the club held the position ol secretary.

<P«r flaqo^iationl

Christchurch, July 20

The following are the handicaps for the principal event to be held on the first day ol the Metropolitan Trolling Club’s meeting: 1 August Handicap, of 1000 so vs., - miles. —Dalnabiiie, Bell Harold, Hypo; (llenelg ser.. Logamvood,. Whispering Willie, Bill Sea. 12yds behind, Bessie Logan, Dolly Dillon, Delevan, Quest 24 yds, Logan Lon, Lady Joan, Alto Chimes, Brutus 130yds., Minton Derby, Jack Potts, Pedro Pronto, Away 48yds, \do 60yds, Logan Chief 84yds, Sheik 108yds; Onyx 120yds behind. ■ NOTES AND COMMENTS. Sir Wai is the only surprising ■’withdrawal from Ihe Grand National Steeplechase, but lie is hardly seasoned and experienced enough for .such an exacting contest. A number' of feuding jockeys- wifi be

in attendance at tlie Gisborne meeting this week, including K. Reed, J. Jbu ry, and 11. Goldfinch. Reed will Ij.v up on Kuliio in the Winter Cup at Ki court on

It i.s noticeable that Sir Rose berry is an acceptor in both of the bij£ jumping races at Kicearlon. He will be attempting something yet to be accomplished, the winning ol tho double, that is- if sent to the post for both rimes.

In the Grand National Hurdles Comical, as expected, has failed Jo survive the payment. He has had a strenuous season for a comparatively newcomer to. the jumping game. Omaliu is another wle\ as anticipated, will not be a runner.

While there are one or two notable defections from the three prin-ipa! races to be decided at Kicearlon next month, they are not 1 by any

means surprising. The races promis. very well, 17 having been left m 'in Steeplechase, 30 in. .the Winter Cup and 20 in the Grand Naibmal Hur dies.

In the Winter . Gup the. two top weights were, not really expected as runners, but Imperial Spark had a few friends who will be disappointed. Duo apparently lias either gone wrong, or lii;s owner, .Mr 1. E. ■Welsh, has - missed the acceptance, 18,, it i.s .significant, that both Red Cent and Luke are missing from the, Steeplechase, lv.illoera- is to he -Mr A. McDonald’s hope, for Rowley, Strategy, and L’Amour have been ruled out. .

The action of the Auckland Racing Club in deciding on seven races a day instead of eight is one to he most warmly commended. Although at times the Noi them Club, owing in its very big acceptances, will be compelled to have more than seven events due to divisions, the move and its intention is one in the right direction. There is no doubt at all that racing programmes, in New Zealand are far too long, and take up the whole of the day in the winter and a good deal more, than half a day in -t.il*. summer time. Ihe tact that the wealthiest club in,New Zealand in regard to prizes, lias, been foremost in this very desirable innovation makes it the more valuable. In addition, the re-naming of the ! ■Auckland Plate the Clifford I Mate—is a happy idea.
