The long-awaited conference between representatives ol the shipowners and the disaffected maritime unions sat for about two hours today. It then adjourned to a date to ho fixed to enable the seamen to consider the owners’ terms.

JOB CONTROL A LEST GO The owners’ terms include: That job control he abandoned; that- the present system of engaging men hi' abandoned; that fortnightly pay inentc* and slopwork meetings beabandoned ; that men lie picked up at ships’ side*, outside. picking-up Limes ai: the marine office; that a conciliation hoard he appointed to sii; in Alelhourne to settle- disputes. These objects to he achieved by altering certain Mouses in the old award, the undertaking that the clauses of the alterd award will he observed to bo inserted in the aril ward to he paid. The only outstanding points appear to be a desire on the part of the owners that they.- he relieved from the, anxieties and uncertainties which have long hampered them through the tyrannies of job control, and. on the part of the seamen, that they secure all the advantages they enjoyed under the lorleited Arbitration Guuri: award. TRANSPORT GROUP WITHDRAWS Sydney, July 21. The transport group, although still prepared to guarantee the terms ol the settlement agreed to by the Commonwealth Shipping Board, has definitely withdrawn from the negotiations.

TOM WALSH OX THE'SITUATION Alolbourno July 21. Air Tom Walsh said flic seamen will have counter-proposals to oflor. He added that several portions of the owners’ terms would not in any circumstances be accepted, by the men. He concluded that they were quite prepared to relinquish job control. hut wanted the owners to relinquish a little control of their job too. The chairman, in- adjourning the conference, said ho would adjourn it until he heard from the seamen. NEWS THIS WEEK The Federal Executive of the Seamen's Union will meet on Wednesday to consider the matter. It is expected an announcement will he made on Friday as to when the conference will meet again.
