A TOUR OF OUR FOOTPATHS

It may bo taken for granted that the gentlcpien who have just, been elected as borough councillors are fairly familiar with the roads and footpaths of the town. However, as there are many miles of both, it is too much to expect that all the nine councillors and his Worship the Mayor-elect have a working and walking knowledge of the conditions of the many footpaths that act as arterials of the town. Therefore, we would suggest, that they should each and all make it a first order of the day to familiarise themselves with this subject. We would like to suggest further that this should bo an order of the night as well as of the day with the councillors.; but it would he rather dangerous for them to fulfil that order literally. They would be in danger of twisting an ankle along some the footpaths if they ventured along them by night. For, as we pointed out. in this column some time ago —and time does not seem to he on the side of improving our footpaths — some of our footways are still a positive danger to wayfarers. The lass with a delicate pair of shoes, for instance, has often experienced a twist of the ankle on the rough and uneven paths that has warned the nerve centre: Take care—beware! To the elderly, the way is very rough. It is to he hoped that each member of the Council will take note of the paths'within the area of his own daily comings and goings. Aind if the notes thus made are passed on to the Works Committee, with sugges- j tions and recommendations as to the need for urgency in repair | >work, we think the town will be the better equipped,, whilst the » dwellers along the rough thorough-1 fares will ho the better pleased i Certainly, it should: he ajmafter of, urgency to have the wayhnadc more safe and smooth.
