MONTHLY MEETING YESTER- ''*>, .-■ DAY. ■ —The monthly meotiiig of tho Iviwitca County Council was held at the county offices yesterday. Present: Crs. L. T. McLean (chairman), \V. P. Shaw, D. H. McLean, F. 0. Stack, J. Brown, AV. Hair. X. Shannon, T. Woods and A. E. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Chairman, Palmorston North Hospital Board, forwarding a copy of his annual report on the Hoard's working.—Received. From the Minister of Internal Affairs, forwarding a copy of the Motor Vehicles Rill, 1924.—Received. From the Secretary, N.Z. Counties .Association, advising that further action in connection with the financing of main highways construction will be taken when the Motor Vehicles Bill is available. —Received. From Mr Trevor Shannon, requesting the Council to fence oil' the metal pit on his property, as at the present time it is dangerous to stock. — Work to be done. From the Minister of Public Works. advising that the Council's application for additional grants for road and bridge works in the county will bo given every consideration when the estimates are being prepared.— Received. From Mr 0. J. Buskin, Cunninghams, calling attention to the condition of the roadway at the corner of Haynes's and Perry's lines and complaining of a. horse being on the road for the past three months.— Road to be attended to.

From Mr IT. Sweet, Ruahino road, again requesting the Council to open tip the Lagoon North road. Dealt with by resolution.

From Messrs Sea ton, Sladden and Pavilt, consulting engineers, forwarding a report on the Vinegar Hill bridge over the Rangitikei river and advising that they agree with Mr Mair that the timber spans should be replaced. From the Clerk, I'angitikei County Council, advising that his Council is opposed to the issue of a maintenance warrant in respect of the work of widening and metalling the road of approach to the Upper Kawbatav bridges; and requesting that the Public Works Department be advised as to this 'Council's views upon the- matter. From the Clerk, Oroua County Council, forwarding copy of proposed joint by-laws, together with memorandum from the solicitors who revised same.--BUSINESS DONE. Oil the motion of (Vs. Shaw and Wood, it waii' '.resolved that application be made to the Government for a (if'.for £1 subsidy up to 1:100 for the purpose of metalling Mania road. The Overseer was instructed on the motion of C'J'S. Shaw and Wood to inspect Lagoon road, with authority to have the necessary repairs carried out. The Councillor for the riding and the Overseer, w.ere asked to inspect the drain at Cheltenham near the hotel. Crs. Brown and Shannon were authorised to sign the agreement to lease the Otara metal pit, Thomas Stewart with the Council, the common seal of the Council to be affixed. Mr T. Hiehie was appointed roadman 'for the Cheltenham riding. The Chairman and Cr. Hair weiv empowered to sisru the clause. whicu is to be inserted in the "Washing-up" Bill in connection with the raising oi the loan for repairs to the Vinegar Hill bridge; that the common seal of the Chairman, Councillors;, and inhabitants of the County of Kiwitea be affixed to the said clause. The Overseers were instructed to prepare a scheme for providing the crushed metal requirements of the district. ACTING COUNTY OVERSEER'S / ! REPORT. Cheltenham Biding.—There has been.'no'permanent roadman on' this length during the month, but an appointment is to be made shortly. Kiwi Lea Riding.—Repair metal has been carted by the dump truck for Bryce's line and the Kiwitea hall, and- the roadman has had the horse and dray patching tlje above road and attending to repairs generally. Wuilu'tia Riding. The roadman at Rewa'is utilising the horse and dray for patching tho pot holes and is doinjr good work. Ongo Riding—The usual maintenance work has been carried out and the roads are in fair order. Kinibolton Riding—The team carted out maintenance metal on to several of tlie streets and on the roads near .the. township. Poep-O'-Day Riding.- The usual maintenance work lias been carried out and the roads arc in fair order. The hridgo opposite Mr England's house on the Pakihikura road 'will require staying up on the south end before the wool season commences. Pakihikura. Riding.-—The team has been carting out metal for repairs on the Ohingaiti-Pcmborton and th< j Sandou Block roads. The roadmen at Vinegar hill and Otara have been getting metal ready to be carted to the dumps. This will be done as 'soon as the truck finishes in tho Hau-

tapu riding. Two old wooden culverts have been replaced with cement pipes. Kangiwahia Hiding.—There has been a certain amount of maintenance metal carted out on the Main South road, and the roadman is now patching pot holes on the main road with the horse and cart. When the team was in this riding several loads were placed on the Mangoira road, but the distance was too far for the horses so I have had to leave the balance to be done with the dump truck when available. Hautapu Hiding.—-There lias been a number of slips in this riding during the past mouth and they have all been attended to. The dump truck lias been engaged in carting out, river metal for repairs on the ufain road in the Upper Kawhatau. When the weather is favourable several concrete culverts will have to be put in where old wooden ones have collapsed. The, team will start shortly carting repair metal off the Rangitikei river for urgent repairs and after that will <:o to Potaka road in the Kawhatau Valley.
