REMARKABLE EXPORTATION
The announcement' by Mr Massey in his policy speech, at Win ton —the centre of Sir Joseph Ward's onetime electorate--that the year's export from New Zealand had aggregated the tremendous amount of £ol,000.000 is an achievement to marvel oyer. And. of that amount, £lB,000,000 was for butter and cheese. When it is considered that there are only 1,300,000 men, women, and children in the Dominion, the SI millions sterling is most remarkable. Vet. added the Premier, the surface of the land was only being scratched for such a rich result. What a prospect that suggests for the future New Zealand, a land that has heail enabled through the addition of adequate population, to develop a policy of intense culture. If less than a million and a half of men, women, and children can get 51! millions .sterling worth of produce sent oversea—not counting the value of the produce consumed within the country—when only the surface of the land is being scratched, what will a million workers on the land and six' millions of population be able to do for Tsw Zealand? And, at that, the 6H million sterling has been turned off the land by a mere handful of workers, whilst the mass of the population are nonproducers, congregatefl in the four cities and the numerous large and not so large towns spread over the surface of this fair land. In his preoration the Premier urged the necessity of New Zealander.s working hard and yet harder for the betterment of the Dominion. The massive value of our expectations indicates that some folks on tlie land must worl; pretty hard —and it is not done by the restriction to an eight-hour day nor. by a 46-honr week. Ft is daylight-to-dark working periods for both the pastoralist and the dairyman that has produced the. £51,000,000 worth for exportation.
