Captain Simmonds, chatnpion rifie shot, returned to ’ Wanganui last night and had a hearty congratulatory reception from a large number of people. Mr Simmonds is in the railway service. 1
Mr A. XL. Burns, sub-editor of Christchurch Press, has been appointed assistant-editor of the paper, hut will retain control ol the sillied i tor ial department. Mr Burns is one of the best known journalists in New Zealand. A London cable announces the death, of Sir William Maeewan, the well known surgeon, aged 76 years. He was "president- of the British Medical Association in 1922, anil president of the International Surgical Society 1920-2.3. He had .been Prolessor of Surgery at Glasgow University .since 1892. He recently visited Australia and New Zealand. -
