There have been sporadic riots in Meerut owing to the strained feelings between Hindus and Mohammedans during the Bakrid festival. ft appears the immediate cause of tho disturbance was the discovery of a pig in a mosque near a Hindu temple. A mob soon collected and threatened the temple, but tho arrival of the District Magistrate lesulted in the dispersal of the crowd. A mob again collected near the city and attacked the Hindu quarters, but the Indian cavalry and police restored order. Thirty-eight wounded were sent to hospital, of these three are in a serious condition, Orders have been issued prohibiting persons from loitering with sticks after sunset and the assembly of over 10 persons after dark.
