Hawkes defeated Ecldand, 6 —2, 6—l, 6—4. AUSTRALIANS WIN AGAIN. DEFEAT THE HAWAIIAN'S. (Received July 30, 11.15 a.m.) New York, July 29. Anderson and Hawkes defeated Detrick and Eckland, 6 —o, B—6, 7—5. The courts were-heavy from the recent rain, tho balls barely rising from the ground. Havvke’s service, with its peculiar twist, proved a puzzle t } the Hawaiians, and they could not handle it, their return at the best ccming back high and permitting the Australians to hammer them hard. Detrick also had difficulty with his service, which lacked appreciable The Hawaiians absolutely lost command in. the first set, and seemed beaten even before the beginning. In the second set they returned to something like good form. The Australians lost games through overanxiousness. The terrific heat took toll of the players’ strength. The Hawaiians resorting to skilful placements rather than speed, and the Australians played more carefully. The Hawaiians made errors through over-anxiety. In the third set the latter began to play tennis of the calibre expected in international tournaments. They demonstrated a knowledge of court stra tegy rather than command of difficult strokes, and put the Australians on their mettle. Hawkes played brilliantly, and Anderson was as steady as a rock. The Australians fought hard and thoroughly controlled the situation, though the Hawaiians maintained an even excellence of play which did not permit of underestima tion of their capabilities .
