GENIUS IN GOLF.

There is a general feeling of satisfaction amongst New Zealand golf players over the cabled news that, immediately upon landing on his second crusade of the ancient links of Britain, Joe Kirkwood has made good. There arc some Feilding players who saw tho young Australian play on the Palmerston links, and they wero impressed. He was then on his way Homo for tho first time. Ho has had much experience sinco then—although it is only a matter of a year ago—and that he has gained it to somo effect is proved by his triumph at this week’s tournament at Lossiemouth. It is especially satisfying that he turned the tables upon clever Abe Mitchell, whose card was 17 to tho bad. This will make tho heart of Kirkwood and his supportors rejoice, because in his initial invasion of the Homo courses his bubble was twice pricked by the world’s champion. Tho first time was at Glcneagles, when these two reached tho final of the 1000 guineas tournament, and the second was at Oxhey in tho £750 competition, when Abe Mitchell scrambled homo only two strokes ahead of Joseph Kirkwood, The Australian learned a very valuable lesson—namely, if one is to succeed iu first-class golf he must be able to drive enormous distances. Kirkwood was not slow to perceive what was lacking in his game, and he went back to Australia fully determined to exploit a new, idea which would add yards to his drive. To-day he fears nobody in the matter of distance that a golf ball can be propelled. KirkWood is full of life and vigour, and if there is anything in the contention that youth tells at golf ns well as in any other game, 'then here is the Aussie’s great opportunity. We wish him tho long, long drive that reaches where success wflits all who dare.
