THE HARE PEST.
,WHAT THE FARMER THINK. A discussion on hares took place at the Farmers' Conference in Wanganui, when the following remit came under review: "That the protection on hares be removed, as they are becoming a pest." Mr Bennett said the hares had become a curse in his district. It was necessary to plant trees in the district, but almost impossible to grow them owing to hares. One settler planted two acres of eucalyptus trees, but in two days the hares cleaned up the plantation. He also saw a crop of turnips practically destroyed by the pest. 'Another farmer related similar experiences in regard to eucalypti Mr G. McGregor said he would like to see every hare in the Dominion exterminated! He knew what the hares could do with root crops. They destroyed fully 25 per cent, of the carrot crops in his district. They even eat the mangolds put out in the paddocks for stock. They visited the paddocks after midnight and before 2 a.m. . ,Tho chairman said he could voucli for all that had been said by Mr Bennett. In Tinui County the hares were a curse. A farmer shut up a small paddock and hares absolutely kept down the feed. He hoped the romit would be carried. The remit was then earned unanimously. ~ /The chairman asked Mr Page, ot the Forestry Department to assist them. , . ~ Mr Page undertook to bring the matter under the notice of the Department.
