HOCKEY

NOTES ON SATURDAY'S GAMES. PAKEHA (6) v. PIRATES (3). The two leading teams met on Saturday and gave a fine display of hockey," which was thoroughly enjoyed by tho crowd of spectators. Early in the game it was seen both teams were doing their best, and it was superior forward play that gave Pakeha the victory, although their backs deserve great credit for their -Jtrong defence. From the buly-off Pakeha forced hard, and kept their opponents busy defending. The first half was decidedly in favour of Pakeha with the result they wero two goals up at half time. Continuing play, Pirates made a determined effort, and were nearly successful, Cliadwick coming to the rescue with a successful drive up the field, which was immediately seized by the waiting forwards, and a fino score .was registered. From the following bully, Pakeha again took charge, but Pirates saved with a timely hit behind. From tho corner hit Le Brun scored with an unbeatable, shot. Pakeha 4, Pirates 0. Pirates rallied, and smart play resulted in a score through Ho'are. Pakeha came again and Gricc scored one of the finest goals seen in Foilding. Lo Brun got the ball, evaded two opponents and centred. Tho ball, rising in the- air, came to Grice, and lie turned its direction into the goal, while it was still travelling in tho air. Both teams were now at it in earnest. Pirates nearly scored, and next moment Pakeha'nearlv scored. Up and clown the field went the ball, and the game was worthy of a representative match. Eventually Pirates registered two further scores amidst applause from their suporterq. Fakeha were not to bo denied, however, and Stuart scored again. Shortly fater time was called, leaving Pakeha the victore by six goals to three. Mr Chas. Wickham gave everv satisfaction as rororee.

HINEKOA (10) v. HIGH SCHOOL (3). School commenced promisingly, but as the game advanced it was seen they wero up against it. Several of their members wero absent owing to the school holidays. Hinekoa are a good team and more will be heard of them later. Mr W. Groube excelled himself a sreferee. KIA ORA (2) v. HINEMOA (0). Kia Ora arc playing with splendid combination and will be a hard team to beat. Goals were scored by Miss Boddy and Miss Young Miss Avison in goal saved with some excellent shots. Mr R. Burgess was an excellent referee. CARNARVON (1) v. MARTON (0). This match was played in a very friendly spirit, and a good game was tho result. Both teams were very oven, and there was nothing much between them. Mr McKensao rendered efficient service with the whistle. HUIA (Marton) (7) v. HALCOMBE (1). Huias were last season's champions and celebrate their first win this season They are evidently coming back to form again. Halcombe are improving and their matches in tho second round will see a difference. Mr R. Burgess was a capable referee. ROVERS (G) v. KIWIS (1). A great feature of this match was the rcfereo. Miss Craven, in the abserce of the referee, volunteered, and carried out her duties in a very capable nianne'-. Toe players wero full of praise for her. Rovers are a solid team, and their next match with Pakeha will be worth watching.

NOTES. Pirates and Pakeha gave a good display and I am not going to sort out the best players on the day. Every player did bis best, and it was a good all-round exhibtio;i of hockey. What a boom hockey has received in Feilding this year—several new clubs and the standard of play much higher than last season. The teams that win the various _ competitions will deserve their victories.

Five-a-side (men) and sevon-a-side (ladies) tournament, June 3. Feilding stands a good chance of winning. Pakeha, Pirates and Rovers should each place a good team in the field. Tu tho ladies' foams Kia Ora, Hinekoa and High School should capably uphold Feilding. Altogether the prospects for the season are very rosy, and the Asstciation is in _ for a busy time when they come to pick the representative team.
