At a conference of technical education directors, supervisors, boards ol managers, and teachers, held in Wei liugtou yesterday, Mr W. F. Durward, of Palmerston North, was elected president for the ensuing year.
Rev. F. Warner, of Beresford street church, Auckland, lias been elected vice-president of the Australasian Congregational Union, states a Sydney message. A cablegram from Manila states that Rear-Admiral 'Dumaresq, late commander of tlie Australasian Station, is seriously ill of pneumonia. Mr Charles Smith, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, in Palmerston North, who lia s been ill, is reported to be making quite a good recovery. Mr W. J. Mack, of Wellington, denies that lie has any intention of standing for Parliament at®the,general election. ) ’/W, ■ The Minister of Lands (Mr Guthrie), who suffered recently from all attack of influenza, lias been able to resume his official duties.
The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr Leslie Ward, tlie cartoonist, aged <72. Few cartoonists have earned fame approaching that of Leslie Ward, “Spy” of Vanity Fair. Mr E. Phillips Oppenliciin, whose “Great Impersonation” is to boscreened at Everybody’s Pictures in Feilding this week-end, has just completed kis 70tli novel. He wrote his first story in his 15th year, and is now ill his 56tli year.
