N.S.W. PARLIAMENT.

WRESTLING WITH FINANCE. (By Electric Cable— Cony rlghi.) lAust. and N.Z. Cablo Association.) Sydney, April 27. In the Assembly, the Hon. Mr Cocks, in moving the re-imposition of the super tax, said the deficit of between five and six millions with which the Government was faced included £1,600,000 on the wheat pools with a further contingency of half a million.* This loss was the result of the promise of payment of 7s-_6d bushel, also overpayments. Replying to the contention that the tax cast an undue burden on t>>e primary producers, lie declared that if the House refused to endorse the measure the .million pounds involved would so hamper the Government that it would be impossible to carry on. Mr Cocks announced that £6,900,000 of the loan money was falling due in London by October. The Dooley Government .had been negotiating for floating a conversion loan of five millions, but the Government had been advised that money could be secured at 96, but decided that the terms wero not sufficiently favourable and further negotiations were proceeding to secure the same terms as those recently secured bv New Zealand. 'Sir Geo. Fuller declared that the tax was essential, but he hoped this would bo the last year it would be necessary. A futile attempt was made to reduce the ta.v from Cd to 3d. After protract'ed debate the gag was applied several times and the Bill passed all stages. REDUCING SALARIES. Sydney, April 27. Troublo over the Members' Salaries Reduction Bill arose on a proposal to .make it retrospective from March 25. After much caustic criticism of the measure generally, Sir Geo. Fuller undertook to make it operative from May 1 and take it through all stages at one sitting.
