SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

On Monday evening the householders in Feikling and district are to hold tbeir annual meetings for the purpose of electing School Committees to carry on the work in the .cause of the education of the young. As alroady indicated, in so far as the larger schools are concerned, thero have been just enough nominations to complete Committees. Those who are specially interested aro not even given the fillip of a contest. Various reasons are put forward for this lack of punch on the part of parents. There is no outstanding question before the educationists. And tho Committees, like tho Boards, aro nowadays nothing but rubber stamps for the Department. Still, all the School Committees of Feilding and district have done splendid work on behalf of the. contres they represent; and ws would herewith pay a tribute of gratitude for that work. Many parents who take not the slightest interest in the conditions under which their children get their education have no idea whatever of the amount of time, money, and service that are devoted by self-sacrificing members of the community in seeing to it that the scholars have an environment that will oncourage the development of the boys and girls. Playgrounds are like lungs—and there are good and bad grounds, largely through the enthusiasm or the lack of interest of tho School Committee. Service indicates unselfishness, and in no department of life is this more marked than in the work of the multitude of School Committees, men and women, in every part of our Dominion. Hence we take this annual opportunity ,of thanking the School Committees for their past services, and urge the old and tho new members not to lose heart because of the obstacles in the way of progress, but to carry on in tho future with all the good will that has marked tho past and has given New Zealanders such a foremost place amongst the educated nations of the world.
