NOTES AND COMMENTS

I nngs for the Town. The official opening on Saturday of the new tennis courts provided by and for the young people of St. John's parish serves to remind ns that gradually Feilding is being furnished with lungs and playgrounds. If each church and school could follow the example of the Methodists and the Anglicans by providing playing courts for its young folks, that would be a fine equipment for the town, and would, by means of contests between each, help on the- cause of Church Union. Tho bowling green provides adequately for the fathers of tho community, whilst to a much lesser degree the mothers can get a game of croquet Wanted, Another Wicket. But Feilding is sadly deficient in cricket grounds. There cannot be a : proper and efficient fostering of the "game unless there are the means for several rival clubs to have their fling. We need two good playing grounds for the national summer pastime. It would give a decided impetus to cricket if a pitch and proper outfield could be provided on Victoria. Park. It wotild be bettor still if two wickets and a good outfield for the playing of two matches simultaneously could be provided on Kowhai Park. JBut how? That is the question which we would like to see the cricketers themselves consider, -and then make their prac-«?&-*=3r y N - ■■■■ • '

tical suggestion. We believe that the playing grounds would be made possible if a scheme was worked out by those interested. Feilding should certainly aim at being self-contained in all pastimes, aud should aspire to being a cricket centre of government, as it is in hoiskey. Inefficient Labourites, Our Labour leaders in the cities are seeking to control local politics as well as national. To this end, the lied Feds see- to it that no municipal flection goes by default. But the bulk of the people—and, after all,, they are the workers—have the measure of the inefficient aspirants to office: That is j why there are so few lied Feds in high places. The latest testing was for two vacancies last week in the Auckland City Council. There were five candidates, and even though this meant the splitting of the votes, oven then the two Labourites could not capture a seat. Both were defeated. The people know these aspirants for what they arc not. The leaders cannob agreo amongst themselves, as is proved split in the Labour caucus in Sydney.. AnVl until they can. rid themselves of the jealousy that eats amongst them like a. cancer, these so-called fjiibour leaders the Empire over will never be equipped to govern the people either nationally or municipally. A Lesson of the Storm. * Yesterday's overflowings of thegutters in town should provide an object lesson for all good citizens. Always when' there is a heavy and sudden fall of rnin, the gutters overflow on to the footpaths, and even on to the roadway, making it awkward in many parts of the borough for pedestrians to " get along conveniently. This is largely duo to the clogging of the crossings that are at the gateways to nearly- every home in*Feilding. It is impossible for the small staff employed by the borough to attend adequately and promptly to the blockages that follow the fall of rain: Every householder, therefore, should facilitate matters in a public spixft, by seeing to it during the dry days that the runaways in front of his gate are clear of rubbish. This forethought on the part of even 50 per cent, of the residents of the borough would save much inconvenience and flood damage to the citizens as a whole. It is a little service for each individual to render—it is too much for the limited staff of the Council to copo with.
