Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1920. SPEED MANIA.

The Coroner said that he would like to remark upon, the number of fatal motor accidents occurring throughout the country. To his mind these accidents were the result of recklessness or carelessness. It was very necessary that some action should be taken and it was pleasing to note that some of tho local authorities were taking precautions' to have them stopped. If the authorities took action to stop reckless driving —as they have power to do —these fatal* accidents would be very greatly minimised.—Mr Goodbehere on.the triple tragedy at Sandon'.

The attention of the highest executive authority in the land, the Cabinet, should be concentrated for the few minutes necessary to provide a small but life-saving Bill for early introduction in tho coming session of Parliament to put a drastic legislative brake upon the speed mania that is not common to Feilding alone. At yesterday's meeting in Feilding of the Oroua County Council a committee was set up to draft a by-law tho operation of which would tend towards making our highways safer from the car of Juggernaut • drivers by the speed maniac. But why waste time on merely local arrangements? The Government should feel impelled to make life-saving provision in every part of the land. A clause that would meet the case for Oroua would do for the whole Dominion. Then Cabinet should provide that legislation. Our opinion is that tho solution would be found in the compulsory licensing of every driver of a car, that a breach ot the speed regulations shall be endorsed (without the option) upon the license, and that two convictions shall cancel the license, without any chance of getting another chance to drive a car. Deadly and dangerous deeds demand drastic determinations.
