The first American middle-class strike among "white collar" men" has occurred at Chicago, where thousands of etenographers, • bookkeepers, and clerks employed, by the city government, hate ceased work because tht> city council ha* refused their demands for a general increase of their salaries by £60 jsatfy. ■•:.-. j The council adopted the report of the finance committee offering to increase their salaries by from £12 to £6, depending on their length of service and present pay. If the strike grows it \vill stop, the municipality's clerical business.
