FLOODS IN THE NORTH.
PUBLIC WORKS OVERSEER DROWNED. TRAIN TRAFFIC DELAYED. Torrential.rain in the north has been followed by heavy floods,' causing one death,, considerable damage and dislocation of road and rail traffic. At Taiiranga 11.5, inches of rain fell between Thursday and Sunday, and the electricity and water supply were cut off, but the former has now been restored. A Taumarunui message states that the Wanganui and Ongarue rivers are in the highest flood recorded for four years. There is an extra; 26 water "'at , the Houseboat, which is now anchored over the flowerbeds. At Rotorua 9.11 inches of rain fell in 48 hours. There were washouts on the railway, and passengers had" to be ' transferred to Putururu, but temporary repairs were effected at Manakau. Te Ruiti is isolated by slips on the main roads. The north express'on Sunday got through, but three feet of water covered the line, between Hangitiki "and Otorohanga and the south express was held up at Te Kuiti, but it is hoped to gei the trains through to-day. E. T. A. Dunckley, a Public Works overseer, was swept off his horse while inspecting the damage at Otorohanga, and drowned. Auckland also reports rain, floods, and slips ■in the surrounding district.' ' .
