RAILWAY FATALITY IN WEL-

LINGTON

Wellington, May 1. During shunting operations on the railway wharf to-night, an engine ran over a man, severing one leg and mangling the other.. The man was removed to the hospital, where he died soon after admission. At a late hour the victim was still unidentified, but, it is believed he was a member .of the crew of the Tainui.

MOTOR-CAR ACCIDENT

Wellington, May 1. A motor-car accident occurred at the Paekakariki road to-day, at McKay's crossing, about two miles north of Paekakariki. The driver took the wroiig turning, and while the car was being turned on to the road again the wheel collapsed and the car completely somersaulted, righting itself on its wheels-again. There were six passengers, besides the driver. Mr Farquhar, of the Auckland Star, was rendered unebnsious. He was cut about the forehead, and it is believed his right arm was fractured. Mr Sheath, Auckland, had a collarbone fractured. The others escaped with a shaking and minor cuts.

ILLEGAL GAMBLING. Auckland, May 1. At the Police Court • to T day, William Morsley, on a charge of bookmaking at the Ellersiie races, was fined £30. Sidney Day, for making bets at the same meeting, was fined £20. ANGLICAN GENERAL SYNOD. Napier, May 1. The Anglican General Synod set up a committee to consider the condition of the Melaiiesiau Mission. At 7 o'clock a boy from the office informed Mr McGuiro that the office"safe was standing open, notes in the safe had been taken, amounting to over £500 in all. It is understood that there were six £50 and several £10 notes. The office has a record of the numbers of the £50 notes, and also of most of the £10 notes.
