HUGHENDEN SEES RED

AN AGITATOR THRASHED

Brisbane, October 20. I here have been sensational happenings in Hughenden, consequent upon the visit of Lieut. Byrne and Sergt.-Major Furey in connection with the War Loan and recruiting. Many disloyalists in the town took exception to the speeches, and the populace has been divided into two sections, resulting in violent streetnghtmg and horse-play. On Friday night a meeting addressed by disloyalists was interrupted, and afterwards free fights were so frequent that the police were powerless to intervene.

Five women set upon a maimed returned soldier and cruelly assaulted him.

Another woman spat upon the badge of a returned soldier. The loyalists then took matters into their own hands, and gave one agitator' until 4 o'clock to-day to leave the town. He did not take the advice, and the crowd gave him an ignominious thrashing. The man then Tetreated.
