THE RAILWAYMEN
Eunedin, September 4
At the annual conference of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute a- telegram was received from Mr Hiley expressing the Department's appreciation of the assistance given by all grades of railwaymen during the war crisis. ( The Conference unanimously resolved that tho attention of the Depart- I ment be drawn to the fact that many positions in the Stores branch were considtrably underpaid compared with other branches, and that the Department should make necessary promotions to rectify the grievance. A motion for an elective executive with headquarters at Wellington was defeated, but it was proposed to .set no a sub-committee resident in Avellington to place the views of the executive before tho management. THE WAR TAXATION. Wellington, September 4. A meeting of business men representative of all parts of the Dominion met to-day at the invitation of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Mr W Manton presided and the chamber was crowded. Tho Chairman said the meeting was called not to have the proposed taxation reduced, but that it should be put on a more equitable basis. Delegates were appointed and conferred later under the auspices of the New Zealand Association of Chambers of Commerce to draft proposals to put before the Minister of Finance.
