SOUTHERN MARKETS.

There is iioumig doing iv tne uneat market. 'mere is a little more inquiry lor oais, tlie demand lor seed ior spring sowing now beginning to set in. j_ocai supplies are difficult to obtain, and tlie tact tliat the oat market in Australia is firmer, and that shipping space is being taken up with wneat, reduces prospects of getting supplies Irom there. The potato market is dull, tor although there are now more sellers there is very little demand. Auckland buyers who have made forward purchases have not yet nad all their orders filled, as owing to the glut in the market they have been asking merchants to hold back theii shipments. Until these old orders are cleared up local merchants are not ready to make any extensive purchases, as the future of the markets is yet doubtful. The shipment of a large quantity of potatoes from the soutn, especially to Wellington markets on consignment, has not tended to improve the position. A considerable quantity of these potatoes was from localities affected by tbe heavy rains, and the condition was.not good. The local price at country stations is nominally £3 to £3 5s per ton. Seed potatoes are still being inquired for from the North Island. There is a little business doing in oat sheaf chaff, up to £4 ss, being offered for prime at country stations.
