Arthur Myers, who is in charge ol (he Board of Trade, that, on account of the scarcity of shipping, merchants contemplate an almost immediate rise in tho price of foodstuffs and other articlps of general ii.se. If tho contemplated rise affects articles already in stock or on the water it does not appear justifiable,"; and it may bo necessary for Cabinet to take action under* the Regulation of Trade and Commerce Act to prevent rises taking place before a definite date in the future, or pending a report on the matter by. the Board of Trade.
