Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. SATURDAY, AUGUST 19, 1916. CALLING ON THE SHIRKER.
Tin: man who has hoped against hope that his services would not be required at the fighting front has had the last prop knocked from under him. As ho noted tho enthusiasm with which "the other follow" volunteered to fill the breach, ho smiled secretly in his shirking. "The more, the merrier"—for him. The Volunteer was playing a noble part—for the shirker. The latter stayed homo and made money, which he is putting out to such usury that even the generous terms offered under the War Loan are by no means attractive enough for him, so that ho is a financial as well as a military shirker. Those who Went lost money, but held an Empire and won fame. But thero is an end to his dodging the issue. He must now toe tho mark. If he does not immediately thtfow himself into tho breach, lie will be a Sent. The shame of it! Tho order has gone forth. Com. pulsory Service begins from tho end of this month. New Zealand is pledged to keep up its full strength at the front, and to do this we must have reinforcements going into training every month. To-morrow is the second anniversary of tho occupation of Brussels by tho Germans. If it had not been for tho stubborn stand of the Belgians, giving Franco and Britain time to put up something. of a defence, it might havo been the anniversary of tho downfall of Paris. Where would Britain havo been then?
