MELANESIAN MISSION.
Colyton settlers will have the opportunity on Monday evening of hearing an address on mission work in Melanesia, to be given by Archdeacon Neil], in St. Andrew's Church.
By the last English mail, Mr and Mry Ruscoe, of Foxton (says the Herald) received a brief letter from their second sou Alfred, who is in the Life Guards. He had been in the thick of the fighting from tember to November in the Ipres area. He returned to London at Christmas time, He also forwarded his mother Princess Mary's gift box of sweets and one of the Queen s gifts, a very neat writing companion. The photos'of their Majesties and the Princess are included, together with the Christmas greetings.
A woman named Minnio MoNeill, who resided at Egmont street, Wellington, was arrested on Thursday night on a charge of drunkenness. ■She appeared to be quite well during the night, but about 8 o'clock yesterday morning she became unwell, and was seized with a lit in the cells. She received immediate attention, and it wiis discovered that she bad swallowed her false teeth. The woman was removed to the hospital, where an operation was performed to remove tbe teeth. While under the anaesthetic the patient collapsed and died short!v after midday.
Mr Charles James Ward, of Takapau, died suddenly on the Palmerston railway station at 12.30 yesterday afternoon. He called for his luggage at the railway counter, asking the clerk to get it quickly, as he was in ?» hurry. Just a s the railway official moved away. Ward fell down dead. It" appears that deceased came down from" Takapau (Hawke's Bay) yesterday morning with sheep, ancUwas proceeding by the 12.20 p.m. train to Morrinsviile (Waikato). Nothing further is known about his movements. He leaves a wife and three children. A few minutes before his death, deceased met his brother-in-law, Mr D. W. Dunford, of Kumeroa, who had just come up from Wellington.
