Cartcrtou, March 5. The concluding day's shooting at J*ai>nwai was fired in good weather conditions except in the early morning, when the.light was" bad. An exceptionally large quantity of oversea mail matter is being brought to Auckland by the steamer Niagara, which is expected to arrive early on Sunday evening. The mails are contained iv 1723 bags and hampers, and come from Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Islands. A SENSATIONAL CONFESSION. Wellington, March 5. 'There has been an interesting development concerning the charge of incendiarism against three men, Chas. Edmunds, Walter Balch and Arthur (,'eo. Young, in connection with Hie destruction by fire of the old White Hor.se Hotel at _ Ngahauranga, now a no-license district, on July 19. Detective-Sergeant Kiuvle produced in court a written statement by the accused Edmunds, in which he alleged the accused Young said to him at Wellington on the night of the fire, "She is going up to-night." meaning the White Horse Hotel, in which he (Young) was interested. The three men walked out to Ngahauranga and entered the hotel, which was empty. Young got through a window., and opened the side door for his companions to enter. They jointly placed some sacks in a cupboard under the stairs, where there were already some old lamps an dvessels that had contained oil. Young set a light to the sanio thing to an old couch in another room, after ripping i<" open and pouring some kerosene upon the stuffing. Edmunds was present in that room, while Balch watched outside on the road. Edmunds, continuing hisstatcment, said lie bad no interest in the hotel, but received t'JO from Young on the following Sunday. As the matter worried him, he decided to confess. When Balch was arrested hesaid he was innocent. Kurt her hearing <il' thf case was adjourned, until Wednesday next.
