Evidence at the inquest on Gwen Christina Wb'tford, aged 13 years, who was drowned in the river yesterday—one of a bathing party at Waiwhaiki—disclosed a gallant attempt ou the part of Mr E. W. Merry weather to save the lives of the two girls who had been upset out of a boat. Hβ dived, half dressed, but collided with a log. On the second attempt, he obtained a hold upon two girlsMiss Tennanfc and Miss Rutherford- - and saved them. Thoufifr he dived again and again, be could not find the other. '■,■,*,■»,■' The Coroner commended Mr Meiryweathor's action, and will recommend it for the Royal Humane Society's recognition. The verdict was —Accidentally drowned .
