BOWLING.

OPENING OF FEILDING SEASON

A RECORD ATTENDANCE

Never before in the l'J years ol' the history of the Feildiug Bowling Club was there such an attendance of players and spectators as at the official opening of the 1914-15 season on Saturday afternoon. Somewhere in tlio vicinity of 30 players camo up from blip Pa-linerston and Terrace End Clubs, and the whole of the green was in use—seven rinks', or 56 players in all, being engaged from 2 to 5 o'clock. Indeed, quite a number of local players had to watch the games from tlio bank, being crowded oil', the green, which was in first-class playing order. The official proceedings opened with the hearty singing of the National Anthem and a round of cheers for the King. Then President D. S. Thomson welcomed all the visitors, and wished them a good time—a wish that subsequently was fulfilled. Replies were made by President Beck (Paimerston) and President Greer (Terrace End). Mrs Thomson then threw tho "jack" j along tho green, and tlio season was I declared open, amid a volley of I cheers.

Aa it was a sort of trial play, thofirst of tho season, and all the rinks wero mixed in a general game, President v. Vice-President, no cards were kept. The Feilding Selection Committee very wisely mixed tho young players with the veterans, thus giving the former a good breaking inj and although this policy seemed tv break up some of the skips, that was purely a secondary consideration. The young players thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and made a good start. Tlio Feildiug skips were: Thomson, Saywell, Goodbehore, J. Bartholomew, Mason, Chappell, and Whittle. A sumptuous and plenteous afternoon tea was provided for at least 100 persons, including an unusually large number of lady visitors, by Mis D. S. Thomson, who was assisted, by Mrs arid Miss Oakley and others. The green is now open for play every line day, and as -iiuifo a number of new players have joined tho [■Club quite a busy and enjoyable I season is expected.
