SELF-DENYING SCHOLARS

Usually, the Bulls School ComniHtee expends £12 in prizes annually for the pupils of the school. Recently, the pupils sent a petition to the committee asking the latter to devote the £12 to the National Relief Fund, instead of to prizes. On behalf of the children, the chairman of the Committee (Mr J. E. Walker) forwarded n cheque for £12 to the Premier. In acknowledging the donation, Mr Massey wrote: "Will you please convey to the pupils an -expression of tlio warm thanks of the New Zealand Government for their loyal and patriotic action, and of its appreciation of,the fact that the pupils are foregoing the amount usually expended in school prizes to make this donation, which makes their action the more praiseworthy and creditable, I have in tho meantime lodged the amount with the Paymaster-General, and it will be Used, in ...the direction desired -by -the pupils."
