FES PRESS ASSOCIATION. A THIRD TRIAL ORDERED. Wellington, March 25. The rehearing of the action New Zealand Times v. The Dominion, a claim for £3000 for alleged libel, was concluded at 5.20 p.m. The jury, after four hours' retirement, disagreed and a new trial was ordered. LOSS OF SHEEP. * Gisborne, March 25. The floods in the Wai_>aoa river, are subsiding. Beyond breaking the Public Works temporary bridge no damage was done. A report from Port Awanui states that the Waiapu river is in heavy flood, causing loss of sheep. The extent of the damage is not yet known. The v/ater is nearly up to the decking of the Waiapu bridge, both approaches to which have been washed away. The river is'now going down.

INFANTILE PARALYSIS. Christchurch, March 25. At the Hospital Board, Dr. Fenwick presented a report on infantile paralysis, stating that the disease had been in mild form. There have been tw orecoveries, the first recorded. Dr. Valentine said that 40 cases had occurred in Dunedin and 30 in Christchurch, and reports from Taranaki suggested that the' epidemic was there. A peculiar fact was that the disease atmany adults, but a good feature was the recoveries. Dr. Fen wick urged that the spread of the disease to the North Island suggested the probability of another epidemic next autumn. MIDLAND RAILWAY. Christchurch, March 25.

Replying to a deputation regarding the completion of* the Midland Railway the Right Hon. W. P., Massey, Prime Minister, said the Government was convinced of the necessity of pushing the work forward. All doubt regarding the success of the tunnel had been removed. He held out no hope of accelei'ation of the construction works. Mr Massey promised to consider a request for the establishment of an experimental poultry farm in Canterbury.
