The wlialiug steamer Zealandia arrived at Wellington to-day from Larvik, Norway. She is owned by tlio Antarctic Whaling Company, of Christiana, and intends to examine the N.Z. whaling fisheries. This company recently formed a base at Jervis' Bay, N.S.W., where it has steamers at present located. A BARBER AND A RAZOR. A labourer named John Leahy, and a barber named Arthur quarrelled at a house in Martin street tonight. Leahy received several slashes in the face with a razor. He lost a good deal of blood, and was taken to the hospital. Widdes was arrested. FAT IN THE FIRE. Dunedin, October 23. A five-roomed hoiise in James Place, Mornington, was destroyed by fire this morning. It belonged to Mrs Grace. iSho was cooking about 11.15 when some fat caught lire and made a fiare up. She was injured by several burne % The pain made her run out to get neighbours to attend to her injuries, and the fired fat set the house in a blaze. Few of the contents were saved. Mr Tennet was insured with the National for £250, and Mrs Grace had a policy for £100 with the Norwich Union. The house was valued at £450. THE LOWEST TENDER, A meeting of the Technical School managers was held to-day to consider the position which has arisen in reference to the contrast for the new building. Tho much-debated question of sex in relation to teachers was debated by tho Education Board to-day. It was resolved that the paragraph hayI ing regard to the eligibility of cerI tain female teachers for the position iof second assistants in schools -of Grade X, contained in the chief inspector's report on the grading of teachers, approved by the Board on August 28, be deleted, the present not being considered a favourable time to give effect to same; also, that the list referred to therein of 15 feinalo teachers be cancelled, the same not being in accordance with the scheme of grading adopted by i tho Board. It was decided to advertise for male assistants for Mount Eden school. ENGLISH NURSES FOR THE BACKBLOCKS. Auckland, October 23. Among the passengers by the Zealandia from Vancouver aro two English nurses engaged by the Victorian Bush Nurses , Association for work in the backblocks of that State.
