Lyell directors and mining inspectors decided that the only way to check the fire was to flood the mine. A stream has been deflected, pouring in 138,000 gallons daily. It is anticipated that a similar quantity is percolating the bottom levels. Brattices have been placed at the outlets, practically sealmg the mine. Relatives of the missing men left in the mine will be notified as the bodies are recovered. A public meeting, at which the Governor and the Premier were present, arranged for a general relief fund.
