The Australians continued their matclv with Surrey, which was fifth on the champion list in tho county contest last season. The Australs,-'with five wickets down for 102 runs (Macartney 57 not out) went on to 292. Scores: — Australia first innings.—Gregory 2, Mayne 4, Bardsley 22, Jennings 11, Kelleway 0, MacCarthy 123, Matthews 58, Emery, not out 37, Hazlitt 5, Carkeek 4, Whitty 11; sundries 15. Total, 292. Bowling Analysis.—-Rushby. five for 6, Piatt nil for 66, Hayes three for 63, Hitch nil for 14, Harrison nil for 28 Bird nil i'or 23, Hobbs nil for 17. THE PLAY DESCRIBED. The Africans carried their score from 26 for three wickets to 170 (Hartigan 57, White 49, Beaumont 17, extras 11), Hirst bowled three of tlie wickets for 50 runs, Haigh got, five for 33, and Rbodes two for 30.
