Sydney, January 29. Richard Arnst, the world's champion sculler, definitely declares that as no fresh rivals are making their appearance in the rowing world he will take to boxing, being tutored by Larry Foley, who brought out Bob Fitzsimmons and other noted fighters. Arnst hopes to make a good attempt to win the world's heavyweight championship.
Thus Jack Johnson: "It appears to be fashionable now to produce a ' white man's hope' once in a while, so I have got one of my own. The only difference is that this fellow is a black man's hope. All the oldtimers like Corbett and Choynski are digging up new men to fight me. Now, my discovery is Walter Monahan, who helped to train me at Reno. He is one of the most improved young boxers I have ever seen. He is going to be my standby in this 'hope' business. Let them bring forth the best of their new finds, and I'll send Monahan against whoever they produce. I'll bet a thousand dollars right now he can lick any white fighter living. He weighs 2041b5, is the most tractable fellow you ever saw, and in the matter of picking up the inwardness of sparing and fighting, is coming along like an express tram. I tell you with Walter..'Monahan watching the ramparts, there won't be much danger of any white man's hope surprising the Jack Johnson stronghold.
