FOOTBALL.

MANAWATU RUGBY UNION

COMMITTEE MEETING

The regular meeting of' the . above was held at Palmerston last nig'-rt. Present—Messrs Hoben (President), Pickett, Foote, Pawson (Vice-Presi-dent),.., Manning, Hankins, McWilliams, Fred. Pirani, and Mackenzie (secretary). WITHDRAWAL OF A TEAM. The Secretary of the Kia Tea Club wrote asking for leave to withdraw their third-class team. Some discussion ensued, Mr Pirani pointing out that the fourth-class team could hardly be allowed to play if their thirds did not comjiete.—Mr Hankins thought they should make an exception in this case, as the -fourths were only small boys.—Tho Chairman hardly thought it would be right to make an exception, as it would be used as a precedent.—Eventually it was decided to give the Kia Toa thirds another week to get a team, ancl to alter the fixtures accordingly. FOXTON SUB-UNION. Messrs Whibley and Robinson waited out he committee in reierenco to players in the Foxton .Sub-Union being allowed to play for Manawatu. Tho following letter was read from the Foxton Sub-Union: Re players residing within the Foxton Sub-Union boundaries, it has come to the knowledge of my executive that it is the intention of Carroll Bros, to play for the Feilding Club in the competition controlled by your Union this season. I would point out that the playors in question reside at Glen Oroua, within our boundaries and my Executive would be pleased if you would immediately notify these players that they must play in tho Sub-Union competition, and would also prevent any player within the boundaries as defined from playing in your competitions. The following letter from the Rongotea Club was also read: I am sorry to say that the Rongotea Football Club have decided to withdraw from the Manawatu Union and join the Foxton Sub-Union. There was a meeting at Sanson to-night, and it was decided to enter a combined team in the Foxton Union. I think we are right in doing this, for delegates from Foxton were down here last night urging us to play in the sub-union, saying that if we do not they would stop us from playing in the Manawatu Union, so the two clubs have done this to save further trouble. The Secretary of the Sandon Club wrote: lam instructed to write and inform you that my club has decided to join Foxton Sub-Union this year. The reason why they did not join your union is that they were given to understand by a member of your committee (Mr Fred. Pirani) that they would not get home for home matches with three Palmerston teams, and they coulcl not see their way clear to travel all the time to Palmerston, as it would be expensive and out of all reason. Mr Whibley asked that the boundaries agreed upon last year be enforced and that no player residing in that sub-union be allowed to play in the Manawatu Union. He denied the statements made by the of the Rongotea Club as to threaj from the Foxton sub-union, mitted, in reply to the chairmathey might have said that the MarSß watu Union would disqualify the play ers if they did not play in the district they resided in. Considerable discussion ensued as tr the proper course to takeMr Manning thought they shouh pass a resolution endorsing the mo tion passed last year fixing the houndaries of the sub-union, and prohibit any resident in these boundaries play-j ing outside the sub-union for cup, matches. At Mr Pirani's request, the chairman ruled that a motion to endorse the boundaries was unnecessary, as the resolution of last year was in force. Mr Hankins considered they should take steps to enforce the 'boundaries question. Mr Manning then proposed that the deputation be informed that the boundaries fixed last, year were in force. Mr Pirani objected to any attempt to coerce players to join any particular club. He contended that no rule was in force by which players were prevented from playing for any. one club within the Union as a whole, and he could certainly say that if anything outside the rules was to be enforced the Feilding Club would not countenance it. So far as the Carrolls were concerned, they need not trouble, as they were determined to qualify to play for r'eilding., but there were other players who might be affected by the proposal. Mr Pawson was quite willing to enforce the boundaries so far as clubs were concerned, but not individuals. Mr Pirani then suggested" that they should add the words to the motion "and members of clubs _ within the sub-union shall play within tlieboundaries of that sub-union, except for Abraham Cup matchesr' This was accepted, and the motion with additions was carried.

Upon being informed of the result, the Foxton delegates lodged an appeal to the New Zealand Union against players residing within the sub-union district being allowed to play for clubs outside that district. OROUA SUB-UNION. Mr_W. M. Stack, secretary Orouu Sub-Union, forwarded the annual subscription, and asked for information about insurace.—it was decided to accept members for insurance on same terms as other clubs, provided arrangements were made for medical, men in the district tr, give certificates. REFEREES. The Referees' Association wrote to the effect that it was satisfied with ," the representation of the Associaion lon the _.Management Committe-e— f Messrs Pirani, Manning, and Hankins j —and did not desire an alteration of | the rules to obtain special roprosentai tion.—lt was decided to pay the As- | soeiatirm the annual grant of £o. THE SHOWGROUND. I Mr M.cK-enzie reported on behalf of the ground committee that Major Dunk, chairman of the A. and I\A. - ground committee, had been interviewed. Four locked dressing-rooms had been appointed to the four senior clubs, the shower bath had been removed to the gymnasium as desired, and the question of removing the fence back was under consideration. SUSPENSION AND TRANSFERS. The suspension on F. Cootes, a member of the Linton Club, was re- ; moved, and he was reinstated as a ' junior player. ' R. Eglinton was trans- , ferred from senior to junior. | NEW ZEALAND REP. j On Mr Pirani's motion, it was doj tided to forward M. Carroll's name as wing-forward for the New Zealand representative team.
