Rome, March 26

Mount Etna's violence is increasing, and five new craters ivve now active.

Crowds of tourists are watching the advancing lava. Many religious processions are parading, the streets in 'the neighbouring towiis, and the churches are crowded with panic-stricken people, praying that further disaster may be averted.

The craters are hurling stones like volcanic bombs.

'A later report sjtates that the lava is advancing at the rate of a metre (39 inches) a minute upon Bolpasso, and Cardinal Nay a lias taken the miraculous veil of Saint Agatha to stop the flow.

Rome, March 27. The eruption of Mount Etna is the sequel to the abortive outbreak in April, 190 S. The central crater is inactive. ' I

The spectacle at night is most impressive. A stream of lava several kilometres long was first seen descending like a burning rampart, from which cascades of fire were falling. The heat was so fierce that it was impossible for anyone to - approach within forty yards. Meanwhile there were detonations sounding like gunfire. Then rain arid_hajl fell. Last night's reassuring reports of Etna's diminished activity continue, though an increased volume of lava near San Leo greatly damaged propeirty. Later. The lava is diminishing in speed; it is now travelling at four metres an hour. The danger is thought to be past.
