WAITUNA WEST.

THE SCHOOL CONCERT

The school at Waituna "West was

packed to the doors, and residents even paid to be permitted to look in at the window, on Thursday evening, on the occasion of the annual concert. The pro-

gramme comprised items by the school children and local amateurs, the •entertainment being an especially good one from start to finish. Songs were given by Mesdames Cooper, Pearce, and Woolven, Miss Shannon, and Messrs Goldsbury and Hayclon, and a duet by Mesdames Cooper and Shannon, and recitations by Muster Carr and Mr Pirani. The children's items were very good, and the two Japanese songs and the humorous Sunflower -chorus caused considerable laughter. The ladies' songs were splendidly given, and Mrs Woolven proved an acceptable addition to the large amount of musical talent in the district. Encores were numerous and were freely responded to. Mr Fred. Pirani presided, and in moving a vote of thanks to Miss Shannon, which was carried with enthusiasm, he referred

to the great trouble she had taken with the preparation of the children's items and her skill in accompanying them. Votes of thanks were also uassed to the performers and to Miss Sinclair (assistant teacher). Mr Hay-

don (headmaster), and Mr Fifield (accompanist). Tn moving n vote of thanks to Mr Pirnni, Mr E. Shannon (Chairman of the School Committee) said they felt honoured iat having the Chairman of the Education Board with them, but were more pleased to welcome him as Mr Pirani.'

During the evening, Mr Pirani gave a short address on educational amis and developments and the progress made during recent years.

The Misses Shannon and Miss Sinclair gave considerable assistance in dressing.the children for tTie "fancy" items.
