Notes and Comments.

The Feilding Jockey Club has every reason to congratulate itself upon the wav in which owners of horses have accepted for the Easter Monday races. There was a very fine hst of nominations, and last night only 30 withdrawals were recorded, an exceptional result. But there is still greater cause of satisfaction in comparing the -acceptances for the coming meeting with those for the opening of the Easter meeting of last year, lhe following little table shows at a glance that every race gives a gam for 1910:_ 1909 1910 Wsiiata Hack '5 U Mangaone Stakes ... 13 1' Kawakawa Hurdles ... 7 10 Taonui Hurdles ... S 11 Feilding Cup H 12 Onepuhi Welter ••• S lo Halcombo Welter ... 10 15 Onga Hack 10 13 Totals 72 112 And the quality of the horses that are to run is well up to good standard of the Feilding Club's meeting. Not only has the Manawatu Cricket Association -shown an absolute failure to rise to its great occasion in having the Australian cricketers-playing there this afternoon and to-morrow, but the lack of publicity - -'yen to the engagement is a poor compliment to Armstrong, Bardsley, and Co. Although it is a hall-holiday in Feilding to-day, no special facilities were provided on tho railways to induce the people in this part of the countryside to see the opening of the contest. The Association should have got into touch with the department to use its services to pour people into Palmerston from all points of the compass today, for the Australian team is a most interesting combine of players, headed by two men of world-wide fame. Bardsley may at any time show New Zealanders the quality that made him a first-night batsman in England last season, and if that outbreak of brilliancy should occur at Palmerston this afternoon, there will be many folks hereabouts who will be sorry that the 'Association did not orovide cheap fares for excursionists. The one advantage the Association has to make cheap fares for excursionists not even an extension of the train time till after the game was finished this afternoon, hag been provided, so that country folks will only see two hours' play to-day. Tt seems that the only up its guarantee is that is St. Patrick's Day, and that may prove an extra, inducement to the crowd to gather at the match. Tt is to be hoped tho Manawatu team will play a better game for the Association than 'the- Association Has played for the guarantors.
