From the Oroua County Council, with reference to the proposed bridge ; at Menzie's Ford, asking the Borough Council for a contribution of ' £500 towards the total cost of £3160. ; They proposed to find the money as | follows: ■Government subsidy £1000, ! Feilding Borough Council £50., set- i tiers £300, Pohangina County Poun- ! cil £200, Oroua County Council £1160. —Cr. Goodbehere proposed that the Council agree to give £500. ; Cr. iSaywell said he would second the motion, providing the other i bodies gave the proportion asked for. \ The Mayor proposed ran amendment that the matter be deferred till next meeting", to enable the Council to ascertain the original allocation, when the Council was asked for £_50. Seconded by Cr. Bramwell, The amendment was agreed to. From Mr S. I. win Crookes, electrical engineer, offering his services to the Council in connection with the proposed electric lighting scheme. — Referred to Electric Lighting Com■miittee. From tho Government Advances to Settlers Office, stating the .Council's proposal to raise a loan of £6500 for installing electric light in the borough would be laid before the Board on the loth prox.—Received. HEALTH REPORT. Mr Morgan O'Brien, Health Officer, reported there were no infectious diseases in the borough. Nine sower connections were made during February, 100 much water was heing discharged into the septic tank, caused by street water getting into the manholes. THE SEPTIC TANK. Air Randall presence, the following report:— in accordance with a request by his Worship the Mayor, I inspected the septic tank and found that the rotating arms were out of order. I am given to understand that new rotating arms are expected to arrive at any time; therefore I need not comment iurther on this-matte]-. The chamber into which the main sewer- | age outlet pipe empties is divided by a battle board. This, in my opinion,' is entirely wrong. AVaste paper, etc., wedges itself under the board and lifts it to such an extent as to allow nearly as much sewage to pass through'the overflow pipe, direct to the river, as goes through the septic tank -its.]., and this was taking place ,at a time when only „ very moderate \ now passing from the sewerage i pipe. The division should, in mv opinion, be in the form of .a "fixed weir'!;.then the overflow pipe would oe in use only at the time of an excessive flow from the sewers. The working parts of the automatic tipping drum require attention; otherwise it may fail to work at all. I would sugost that the filtering ehamher at the lower end of the septic tank he run off at least once a month and the filter thoroughly r-leaned. This would enable the septic tank to do its duty more effectually, and there would not be the liability of the overflow pipe to be in use as it is at present. By keeping the filtering chamber clean, it would enable 1 one to decide, or to make a suggestion, as to whether the septic tank . could cope with more sewerage than it allowed to pass through the 4in I pipe at its inlet. j On the .-motion of Crs Bramnvelland ; AY/illiaimson, Mr Randall was authorised to have the work he had suggested carried out.
