APITI.

A MEETING ON ROADS

UNANIMITY OF OPINION. OUK OWN CORRESPONDENT. At the meeting of ratepayers lield in the Public Hall on Saturday night, Mr P, McConnell being voted to the chair, there was a. very good attendance. Mr J. P. Clark, one of the convenors, stated that the sum of £250 iiad been placed on the estimates for improving the Cliff-Valley road, and it was thought that if the ratepayers were in favour of the money being spent on this road the Poliangina County Council would do their share. The meeting was called to discuss the matter. Mr J. Matthews moved: "That this meeting of ratepayers respectfully asks the Council to take steps to sec i) re the Government grant of £250 for improving the Cliff and Oroua Valley roads. , ' The mover pointed out that the road was not safe at present. If improved, it would also considerably l■edμce the time in reaching Feilding, Apiti's railway centre. Mr G. H. Purnell seconded the motion. Besides adding to the safety of people driving, it Avould make ah excellent stock road, aiict help to enhance the value of their land. He was in favour of the money being spent where most needed, irrespective of the side of the bridge. This opinion was also shared by Dr. Gregory and Mr Geo. Field. Mr Geo. McMillen thought the road should be widened 3ft, as it was only in a few places where two vehicles could pass unless the driver felt inclined for a big drop. (Laughter.) The motion was carried unanimously. A committee, consisting of Messrs Purnell, Burns, McMillan, Guy, and McConneJl, was elected to accompany the county engineer on Tuesday to the site where the proposed improvements should be effected. Mr 0. Tyerman considered that a road which was'iequired is a shorter cut to Rangiwahia and Curl's Clearing. This would be a boon to settlers at these places who desire to attend the stock sales. A bridge could jbe dispensed with for the present. IHe moved: "That the settlers of Apiti desire the Apiti to Rangiwahia road, known as Watson's Track, to be opened for traffic, that the time •has arrived for steps to be taken to get this road through, and that the Government should be approached." Mr G. McMillan seconded. lv supporting the motion, Mr Guy mentioned that at the recent visit of the Kiwitea County Council, members and Mr D. H. Guthrie, M.P., had expressed views strongly "in favour of this road being put through. The motion was carried unani- i mously. A matter which has caused considerable discussion was then brought forward, viz., the lighting of the township streets. On the motion of Mr Guy, seconded by Mr Field, it was decided that arrangements be made for lighting the streets of Apiti and Dr. Gregory, Messrs Gibson, Matthews, Viles, Decke, and the mover be a committee to consider ways and means. After the meeting, members of the Chamber of Commerce met to make arrangements about entertaining the Minister of Railways and party on their visit to Apiti on Tuesday, and it was decided to' entertain the guests at luncheon in the hotel. A match between Kimbolton and our local tennis club was played here on Saturday, resulting in 'an easy win for the .former team. The visitors were delighted with the asphalt courts.
