First Lieutenant Filchncr, of the German General Staff, who has been an explorer in Tibet, Pamir, and Turkestan, will lead the German Antaratj< expedition, which hopes to start ir. October, 1910.

If two ships participate in the expedition tho cost will be £100.000, and if one ship participates the oo .t will be £60,000.

A high personage lias anonymously contributed £15,000, and others £3000 towards the cost of the expedition. Lieut. Filchner explained his plans at a meeting of the Geographical Society in Berlin. • Professor Nertlenskjold, the famous Norwegian Arctic explorer, who was present, expressed his approval of them.
