■Ch-ristchurch, February 9. ' the week there has been a great change in the weather conditions, persistent rain giving way to warm sunshine and drying winds. As a result, the grain in the stook Siecl rapidly and the work of gathering it nas continued without intermission ever since. The condition of the grain is reported to have- improved greatly since the- rain, and it is not now anticipated that the damage will be us widespread as was at one time feared. A considerable amount of work lias yet to be done, but given another fortnight of favourable weather .not a great amount of stuff will be left ungathered- in the northern part of the province. The amount ot gram placed on offer during last week has been comparatively small, but for offerings thero has been a ready sale. Samples in sound condition are commanding good competition pnees ranging from 4 S to 4s Id on trucks at country stations. These prices were' not fixed on English values but 011 local requirements, ami it is fair to assume that they will, he maintained only ~s long as tho demand esigts. Farmers have >cen ready sellers, but merchants Have shown any disposition to operate freely, being dubious as to the condition of grain and oats jvinch are not coming forward in "•''■•we quantities.- Samples shown during the. WC ek have been of fairly good quality, not having been damaged by tho weather to nearly the extent antu-ipated some time aco. Ihe yHfls of many of the crops threshed have been unsatisfactory, the returns per acre being disappointingly low, while "tl, o samples have invariably been light.
