THE SCHOOL PICNIC

GARDENS KEPT BY SCHOLARS

AT HOME

The .annual picnic and pme-givnig of the Cheltenham School was hold on Mr Mills' beautiful grounds on the Cheltenham cross road yesterday, and a very enjoyable spent by '. a large number of actults and children. The ladies of the district had provided.an abundance of appetising daintaes, to which full justice was done by the great gathering of pleasure-seekers. A programme of sports and games was controlled by members of the committee in general and Messrs Murray and J. Mills in particular, while races for the children were a prominent feature" of the gathering. * . During the afternoon, Mr Fred. .Pirani CChairman of the Wanganui Education Board) presented the prizes, congratulating, the teachers on the number of successful proficiency certificates gained at the school and the committee on their good work.

A special feature of the prizegiving was the presentation of a money prize given by Mr 'Beadnall for the best garden maintained at home by a pupil of the school. This was won by Charles Stretton, with 189 marks out of a possible- 200. 'Hie other competitors were-. F. Stretton 186, Ivy Stretton 183, J. Harro 177, H. Miils 169, Eva Oldfield 164, H. Four first, prizes were given to Edith Ayres, Lily Ayres, Frank Stretton, Milly Anniss. Four second prizes to Florence Ayres, May Milts, STilly Anniss, Charlie Stretton.

At the conclusion of the prizegiving cheers were given for the teachei-s (Mr Harre and Miss Campion), the Committee, and Mr Pirani.
