Reid, and JRedmavne. CORRESPONDENCE The following letters were received : From Messrs 13arraud and Abraham, McLaren and Co., and S. I. Crooks, re road roller. From Engineer-in-Chief, stating no objection would be made to payment of subsidy on the remaining items of Lower Gorge bridge expenditure. — The frJhairman explained .that /this was about £140 of the balance of £900 which the Department refused to subsidise, a great deal of which was for supervision. From Treasury, stating tliat special rate for the Joan of £54"5 bad been gazetted. From South British Insurance Co., re accident insurance. — Decided to continue with the Ocean Co. From Max Eichler, offering to undertake the position of ranger for the Halcombe distract. From N.Z.C.A., re State Guaranteed Advances Act. — It was decided to make representations against any alteration of the Loans to Local Bodies system. From W. Mitchell, ro Penelope road deviation. From Manawatu County Council, agreeing to the new boundaries. From Kairanga County Council, stating that they would take over control of the Feilding-Bunnythorpe road, between the Aorangi bridge and Bailey's crossing as from December 1, on the terms offered. From earn©, forwarding account for £1.05, being contribution to cost of works on Gorge road . — Passed for payment. From Wanganui Education Board, re making wool-closing classes known. From J. Jepson, offering 5s for old timber taken off bridge on Bunnythorpe road. From Bunnythorpe School Committee, asking Council to put down a 6mall culvert for approach to teacher's residence. — Agreed to. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr Roy Harding reported : Two culverts, one on the Tokorangi road and one on the Kakariki-Halcombe road, have been replaced with concrete ])<>«. The road machine lias been at work in the Makino and Taonui ridings, in the former Foxlong'e road has been trimmed and the water-table on Kimbolton road from the reservoir to Cheltenham has been cleaned out. The contractor lias commenced the work of widening and gravelling Makino road. The small bridge on the Bunnythorpe road ha 6 been re-decked as authorised at last meeting. The big cutting on the new formation on Kelvin Grove road has been cleared of all slips and the batters have now been taken down. The Watershed road, from Reid's lino to the Buiwry-thorpc-Ashhurst road, requires a few loads of metal, two teams for about two days would complete the work. I have also to report that Mr Hanlon has not. yet carried out his promise to repair the damage, done by his teams to the road leading from the Gorge bridge to the railway station. Mr J. Lawrence has put about fifty yards of gravel on the Ashhurst streets and about another fifty yeards on the Bunnythorpe-Ashhurst road. From Messrs J. and H. McLaren, of Leeds, England, offering a road roller for £700. From Feilding Borough Council, agreeing to hire road roller, if Buitable arrangements could be made. BUSINESS DONE. On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Or Bowling, That the resolution dealing .with the deviation through Mr Mitchell's land be amended by the addition of the words he suggested, viz., that "either the Council or the occupier of sections 33 and 34 desiring its removal shall bear the cost of such removal." Max Eidhler was appointed ranger at Halcombe. It was decided to close the Council's offices from December 23 to January 5, inclusive. NO ROAD ROLLER. Cr Pearce moved, and Cr Rowling seconded, that the Council purchase a combined traction engine and road roller, payment to be extended over three years. On being put, the motion was lost, Crs Pearce, Rowling, and the Chairman voting for it, and Crs Burrell, Reid, Redmayne, and Vincent against.
