A preliminary inquiry was held tonight by the Officer Commanding the District (Lieutenant-Colonel Wolte) into the case of Captain Knyvett. It is understood that it was decided the case should be referred to a court ol inquiry (court martial), the officer commanding considering. the case too serious for nim to deal with. At the Police Court this morning, Mary Parker, on a charge of selling liquor without a license, was fined £50. The Magistrate said it was a very bad case. Ashburton, December 3. James Lorgelly, a hotelkeeper of Methven, in the Selwyn licensing district, was to-day fined £10 on a charge of soliciting an order for liauor on the Ashburton racecourse. The case arose out of a sly-grog selling case which was heard a fortnight ago, when Lorgelly gave evidence which led to his own conviction to-day. Wellington, December 3.
