[PBB PBKBB ASSOCIATION.] MAN'S STRANGE CONDUCT. Auckland, March 27. A young man named James Robinson drove last night to a hotel in a cab and invited a stranger to drink with him. Upon his hospita- ! lity being refused, Robinson said Be would kill himself. He produced a razor and gashed his throat. The wound was b*** serious. Robinson is now in the hospital. THE FRISCO MAILS. Auckland, March 27. i The Chief Postmaster at Auckland informed a Star reporter that the conveyance of American and English mails via Tahiti has been in existence for three months past. Outward mails would be forwarded from Wellington. FIRE AT NELSON. Nelson, March 27. At about 2.30 this morning a twostoried house in Brougham-street, owned by Mr Samuel Leach, of Stoke, and occupied by Mr D. T. Schmidt, an official on the sewerage works, was burnt down. The occupants had barely time to escape in their night attire, as in a few minutes the whole house was enveloped in flame. Only one or two articles of furniture were saved. Mr Schmidt's furniture was covered by a policy of £115 in the Yorkshire office. The origin of the fire cannot be accounted for. The fire brigade arrived on the scone about twenty minutes after the alarm was sounded. Considerable delay ensued before a fire-plug could be found. FIRE IN HASTINGS Hastings, March 27. A fire last night started in th<stables at the rear and adjoining a block of shops fronting Station-street. The back portions of the shops ignited but the brigade succeeded in beating back the flames. The fire spread from shed to shed and cleared a lot of old buildings which were a menace to the town. The stables which were owned by a syndicate were insured for £400 in the Commercial Union office. Fitzpa trick's billiard saloon (damage £90 only) was insured for £400 in the London and Lancashire office. PRESBYTERIAN RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE. Dunedin, March 26. At to-day's meeting of the Knox College (the new Presbyterian residential college) the master reported that there would be 41 students in residence during the winter. The official opening, at which the Governor and Sir Joseph Ward have signified their willingness to be present, will ncft take place till the end of May, but the College will be open to students, on April 22. t)n that day all students will take up their residence except medicals, whose session does not begin until May 1 THE PENGUIN INQUIRY. A sharp shock of earthquake, lasting nearly half a minute, was felt at Waitangi at one o'oloek yesterday, and a slight shock at 8.40 last night. HARBOUR COLLISION. Dunedin, March 27. . The Nautical Court found the Maheno responsible .for the collision with the Matariki, near the Rattray street wharf ,and ordered the Maheno people to pay twenty-one guineas costs. OHINEMURI LICENSING POLL. Wellington, March 26. In Chambers to-day, Mr Justice Cooper granted a motion moving the case Cock v. the Attorney-General and another (an endeavour to upset the Commission, with Judge Sim as Commissioner, appointed by the Government to inquire into certain allegations of bribery in conection with the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee of June, 1900. The grounds advanced were that important and diificut questions of law were involved, and it was desirable that they should be decided by the higher court.
