SWIMMING SPORTS.

SECOND CARNIVAL ANOTHER SUCCESS. FINE WEATHER AND GOOD SPORT. Postponed from Saturday, January 30, the second swimming carnival was held in Mr Chas. Carr's lake yesterday afternoon. The attendance, about 300, was very good, considering the strong counter attractions — bowling,. 'a popular birthday party for children, tennis, and swimming sports at Woodville and Kiwitea; but it was disappointing, in that the regular Wednesday holiday makers (shopkeepers and their assistants), who have hitherto complained that they were not catered for in the way of sport were conspicuous by their .absence. The sports were distinctly interesting, and some of the events were very entertaining. Notably the Bun-and-treacle Race, which proved so popular that an encore event had to be placed on the programme. The Balloon Race was also amusing,* as well as being a pretty event ; and the Obstacle Race was diverting. The special feature of the contests was the large number of local boys, some thirty of them, who entered and proved themselves excellent swimmers. Special praise is due to the encouragement given the carnival by the Wanganui Swimming Club, which again sent a contingent of competitors to yesterday's meeting; and tnis despite the disappointment on January 30. The officials for the sports were: Jtldges, Messrs L. E. Jackson, A. M. Ongley, and W. H. McLean; Starter, Mr F. Pirani; timekeeper, Mr Geo. Short; secretaries, Messrs P. Prior and Shirley; and two members of the Cricket' Club were at the gates. A bevy of ladies — Mesdames J. C. Hill, Mason, and Peat, Misses Walpole, Hill, Walker, Moore, Mills (2), Haggett^-<lid splendid work in the Afternoon Tea department. Mr L. E. Jackson gave a donation of 10s 6d to the funds, which are for the further improvement of the cricket ground on the South Street reserve. Mr C. Carr, who had generously given the use of his grounds, was also amongst those who rendered valuable hejp during the afternoon. The following were the results of the contests: — Balloon Race. — C.
