The Feilding Star, Oraua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1909 Manawatu Shows.

Last week we had occasion to congratulate the Feilding A. and P. As-: sociation upon the success of its fifth annual Show. Yesterday we published some particulars concerning the operations of that very much larger kindred body, the Manawatu A. and P. Association. There can be no. comparison between the two, for the Manawatu Association is nearly twenty years older than her Feilding sister; but both, are bodies in which this district is keenly interested and closely associated with— for both illustrate in the spring, summer, and winter seasons the capabilities of our districts. The annual statements of the Manawatu Association are therefore of more than passing interest, and a review is well worth while, for the development ' makes history for our agriouß'tural and

' pastoral interests. The financial operations of the Manawatu Association may be seen at a glance in the following miniature table of comparisons taken from Secretary Lane's ! comprehensive statements: —

To handle receipts aggregating £28,611 in five years is no small achievei ment even for a metropolitan body ; in New Zealand; and the evenness ' of the yearly total takings is a re- ' markabllo feature of the figures which ' we have tabulated as shown above. j The men behind the Association, however, will regret that there is a ' contra side to the statement. Here it ' is. as gathered from the statement of ; the expenditure— ! -.i-.r.r- -./-./■>•. 1/-./T7 1 O/IO 1 000

These figures certainly indicate heavy ' expenses, but there is much outlay 1 necessary in maintaining the inter- ' est and' developing the influence of ' such an association. And it must be 1 remembered that building operations 1 and the improvement of the grounds ' are operations that must continue year by year. Taken by and large. ' we think the Manawatu Association is to be congratulated upon the work j it has done and is doing and upon the position to which it has attained : and all this, of course, reflects : much credit upon its most excellent ; executive officer. Mr J. C. L:ine, who, . by so promptly placing the statement ; for the past year's operations before ' the Committee, has made himself a model for other secretaries of bodies iv which the public is interested.
