Captain Pearce. who was an apprentice on board the vessel, displayed signal gallantry in rescuing Miss Carmichael, the only passenger who was not drowned. A Ohristchurch telegram states that at yesterday's meeting of the • Board of Governors of Canterbury (Lincoln) Agricultural College, the chairman (Hon. E. C. J. Stevens) stated he had received a cable message to the effect that Robert Alex, ander had been appointed to the position of Director of Idncoln College, in place of Mr W. Lawnej who recently retired to take up the position of Director of Agriculture in West Australia. Mr Alexander is to leave England for the dominion on March 18.
