GENEERAL LABOURERS.

CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. A conference of delegates repre. seating the head organisations of the General Labourers' Union was opened in Wellington yesterday. The deliberations of the conference will pro. bably extend over to-morrow. In the main the conference will be engaged on business connected with the internal workings of the union, and the proceedings will follow the lines adopted by the Australian Workers' Union. The delegates will discuss the establishment of a weekly journal in connection with tbe working of the Union,- and also proposals for more complete organisation of ' the labouring men. ._ The election of a geueral secretary, whicli was decided by ballot last evening, resulted in the return of Mr W. J. Reardon by a large majority over his opponent, Mr E. Brigden. Mr F. O'Keefe, president of the union, who was unavoidably absent, sent a presidential report in which be congratulated the union on its prosperity, and expressed the hope tbat members would see tbe necessity of relying more on industrial combination and political action rather than the uncertain benefits of the Arbitration Act,
